SGT 101 - Surgical Pharmacology and Anesthesia

2 Credits

This course provides a study of pharmaceutics used in surgery. The actions, usage and side effects of commonly administered medications and solutions and the methods by which they are administered are presented. Computation of medication doses and solution composition is introduced.

Prerequisite(s):SGT 100, SGT 110, BIO 144, MTH 160, and HIM 104 each with a grade of C or higher. Co-requisite(s): BIO 145, ENG 101 or ENG 200, PHL 210 or SOC 210 and SGT 102.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the appropriate surgical uses, classifications, actions, types, modes of administration, side effects or contraindications of medication or specific hormones.
2. Define general terminology associated with perioperative medications or diagnostic agents.
3. Explain the components of anesthesia preparation of the surgical patient.
4. Correlate use of anesthesia monitoring devices with patient hemostasis.
5. Accurately identify and verify medications or solutions with the circulating registered nurse for intraoperative use on the surgical patient.
6. Prepare accurate doses of medications on the sterile field.
7. Demonstrate proper procedures for the care and handling of medications or solutions per surgeon's orders.
8. Compare and contrast the methods, agents or techniques of anesthesia administration.
9. Describe anesthesia complications with the interventions used to manage those complications.
10. Identify potential misuse of drugs, alcohol or tobacco that could impact the health and wellness of a surgical patient or healthcare worker.
